I've used the LL Bean ball and it makes great ice cream...just make sure you use cream when making the recipes provided. It is ready in about 20 minutes!

Two reasons why ice cream is not in my list of bare essentials:

1. I eat ice cream very rarely, only when the ice cream mood strikes me. We have ice cream in our fridge because I don't know when the mood will strike. Unfortunately, it's usually when there aren't any. One day I would see the ice cream while looking for something else. 10 hours or 30 hours later, I'll feel like having some ice cream but when I open the fridge, its gone. What my wife needs is an advanced version of the spider-sense. "Hmm. I think Don will crave ice cream tonight..."

2. We just don't have any room to eat anything else after our usual Korean BBQ. There is always room for beer but I have a separate stomach for beer.

http://utopia.utexas.edu/lesson_plans/v_jones/ice_cream.html

I think Girl Scouts have been making ice cream for years with two diffferent sizes of coffee cans using the same principle.

Granted two coffee cans are not quite as attractive as the lexan LLBean version.

The campout is such a cool idea.
