What I did in the freezer aisle

May 27th, 2004 · 1 Comment

In Safeway’s freezer aisle yesterday I remembered what Lisa Williams wrote. She described her kick in the consciousness moment that happened to her as she was staring at ice cream in the grocery store, trying to choose which one to take home. Her friend Meg asked “Why choose?”, a question that sparked Lisa’s revelation.

So I said to myself that afternoon: Why choose? And brought home two half-gallons of Dreyer’s frozen yogurt: vanilla and cookies ‘n cream. Unlike Lisa’s story, it was 5 pm not 3 am, and the stuff was on sale. But I still broke a rule of my own and brought home two. In honor of Lisa and her inspiration. Or was it only indulgence?

I liked Lisa’s story. both what she realized and how it happened. I’ve received inspiration or revelation while walking or dusting or gardening or stirring soup, even doing the dishes (note to Enoch🙂. I don’t even think of them as “weird moments”. Perhaps it’s not as intentional as taking time to meditate and reflect on life. But I think that’s how life happens. When we’re weeding, driving, getting the mail, or buying ice cream.

But now I’m not sure what to do with all this frozen yogurt. Lisa, wanna come over and have some? Since you inspired me, I think the least you can do is try to help me eat it 🙂

What does this mean?

Take the quiz: “Which American City Are You?”

San Francisco
Liberal and proud, you’ll live your lifestyle however you choose in the face of all that would supress you.

I’m a bit surprised by this one – not a selection or description I’d choose for myself! – so I tried taking this again. I was hoping to get Seattle of course – but somehow ended up with S.F. multiple times. Is it because out of the drink options (all alcohol except one double espresso) I chose wine? Or because I like to sit in a coffee shop (given the options – what happened to parks, hiking, beach etc.?) or that I prefer to walk rather than drive? Even when I switched to a car, I got this same city…it seemed no matter what I changed, San Francisco was my fate…

How to stay awake all the time

Take Tyler Cowen’s prescription for caffeine usage with this handy personalized sleepiness chart (via Clive Thompson) and presto – no need to sleep again! Simply administer low dosages of caffeine throughout the day, especially corresponding to the graph’s predictions of somnolence and constant alertness will result…

after all, sleep is such nuisance, I wonder why we humans haven’t figured this all out before…now please excuse me while I go take a nap…

Enoch was jesting

May 26th, 2004 · 2 Comments

Enoch’s comment yesterday on my sexy dishes post clarified for me what he wrote. I am relieved! I was getting concerned. After all if “action” doesn’t motivate a man to do the dishes, then what does?! I thought I understood what motivates men. Then again, I won’t claim to understand men. Or women, as a whole, for that matter. There’s only one man I should try to understand completely. But I was beginning to wonder, Enoch, what DOES it take to get you to do the dishes?! 🙂

Finally I’ll stop fighting with my husband

May 26th, 2004 · 1 Comment

I can’t get Ted to get dressed up. I think he looks nice in a shirt and tie. I’ve got these misty memories – and proof in a pile of photos somewhere – of Ted wearing white shirt and red tie, as we’re about to go on one of our first dates (to a dance?), with this look on his face as he’s smiling at me…

My husband is a jeans and T-shirt guy. To get him in a shirt and tie something special has to happen. A trip to the symphony is an effective excuse, I’ve found (and he wonders why I’ve ;earned to like classical music). Or someone getting married. Maybe I’ll have to marry him again to see him in a suit…;)

But after I saw yesterday’s tidbit from Clive Thompson detailing the sanitary truth of neckties, I’m convinced. Sure, Ted isn’t a physician. But this former microbiologist won’t be duking it out with her dearly beloved in order to see him wrap a piece of filthy cloth around his neck. Even if he looks cute in it. So much for the memories – sentiment loses to science for me every time…and sure, he does look cute in his T-shirts and jeans too…or anything he wears…
