My second thought about Ronald Reagan’s death was for Nancy. Caretakers take it hard. I can only imagine how difficult it must have been for the Reagan family to watch him suffer from Alzheimer’s for years.
My mom took care of my retarded brother for his entire life: he always needed help with something. When he was dying of cancer, he needed help with everything. He couldn’t walk or eat on his own. He became a different person. For the last few days of his life I was at home with my brother and mother, and I saw how hard it was, not only physically, but also emotionally for our whole family.
I join with Dan Gillmor in wishing the Reagan family peace.
