I want to draw like Henri Matisse

said Abigail this afternoon while taking out her paper and pens.

The other day we read a library book A Bird or Two A Story About Henri Matisse by Bijon Le Tord. I don’t know much about Matisse myself, and this book is an introduction to his style and life.

Looking at his masterpieces on the web, I found Girl With a Black Cat and Girl with Tulips.

How about Girl with Scissors? Soon Abigail was asking for scissors and tape, and next she and her sister were creating clothes for their dolls from paper, pushing and folding shoes, skirt and pants. Michaela made a dentist bib for her doll.

Getting up from my desk, I asked what had happened to drawing like Matisse? Abigail showed me a book she had made of collage and the outfits she had fashioned. Reading on the Web, I learned that these creations are also appropriate: Matisse was known for his collages and papercuts as well as his paintings.

What I had to do, I did the best I could – Henri Matisse

I think the Girls with Scissors would agree.
