What to do when you can’t make it to a blogger meetup: fry Oreos

September 18th, 2004 · 3 Comments

Wednesday I was regretting that we couldn’t make it to the meetup. So I did the next best thing: I cooked deep-fried Oreos. After all, if you can’t be with bloggers, you might as well read bloggers and find some inspiration there.

I can’t remember the last time I bought Oreos. The girls and I agonized over the decision. Should we choose low-fat? Or Halloween? The orange ones were on sale. But we opted for the mint ones. I wanted to try a new variation.

Of course, my maternal guilt gene started activating as soon as I thought about taking my kids to the store to buy cookies. But then I felt relieved when I overheard two other moms with their kids meeting each other at the store.
“Doughnuts!” shouted one woman to the other.
“Cookies!” replied the other.
I guess there is comfort in conformity.

Here are some photos from my own creation.

How did they taste? Not as chocolate-cakey as I had imagined. Of course these were mint Oreos. And I should have fried them longer. I was too worried about burning, but the dough didn’t get done on a few. The girls and I ate some, even though Abigail asked if we could have some of the plain ones. I used milk in the recipe so I couldn’t offer any to Ted. These fried Oreos weren’t a big hit at our house. But that’s okay. After dinner I cleaned up the leftovers. Yes, I tossed those cookies!

Of course, next time, if we can make it to the meetup, it would probably be the best of both worlds to bring Oreos for other bloggers to enjoy. Then again, if the other bloggers have any sense, they might not want to come anywhere near these fried cookies. On my own I probably would be repulsed by them too.

But I have to thank Joey for the link to the recipe (the rest of the site is interesting too). And for giving me the courage and idea to do it. After all, if the Accordion Guy posts it, then it’s worth trying, right?! 😉

oh my! now will we be seeing recipes for the best dough to fry Oreos in? 🙂 and my hunch tells me, to go with classic Oreos, not the mint or double-stuf or other new-fanagled flavors 🙂

Yes, do stick with the classic Oreos. As far as the dough goes, I confess mine tasted too much like pancake batter! 🙂

Up late writing a conference paper and these are making me hungry!
Thanks for the bday wishes too–very sweet.
Are you going to BloggerCon? Wish I could make it out there but have too many other commitments this semester. I hope there is another in the Spring.
