A diver at dinner

January 15th, 2005 · No Comments

A diver sat with us at the dinner table Monday night: a Cartesian diver we had created from soda bottle and eye dropper. What fun! Even Elisabeth enjoyed pressing on the bottle to see the eyedropper bob up and down as the air bubble changed size.

Other adventures we’ve enjoyed in the kitchen included making our own lava-lamp in a glass. Add oil and then food coloring to water in the glass. Then salt sprinkled on the top layer will begin the magic…apparently this experiment was discovered by someone playing around with condiments in a Chinese restaurant.

Our third aquatic adventure…After three tries, we finally discovered the right kind of soap – moisturizing Softsoap – to add to water in a bottle in order to see the flow outlined with the silky residue. More fun!
