Skating sorrows

January 14th, 2005 · 1 Comment

I am planning to write a post later about the United States Figure Skating Championships this week (to be televised on ABC Saturday). But after reading news from the competition, I want to express my sorrow.

Skater Angela Nikodinov and her family were traveling in a shuttle from the Portland airport when a car accident happened, killing Angela’s mother, Dolores Nikodinov.

This tragedy has impacted many skaters at the event, including both the senior women and men. Olympic medalist Timothy Goebel who won the short program competition yesterday broke down in tears while still on the ice, in sorrow for his friend.

My thoughts, prayers and sympathies go out to the Nikodinov family and friends.

I heard this on NPR this morning and have been unable to tell my daughters yet. Too close to our own experience.
