I won’t even try to be cool

November 2nd, 2004 · No Comments

Parenting may not be cool but that doesn’t mean we can’t dance around the living room to The Wired CD from November’s issue. That’s what we did right before Ted left on the plane for San Francisco Sunday afternoon: slide in the CD, crank the stereo and boogie…with our best late-1980’s moves….while our young children laugh at us…

Father – and fellow island blogger – Chris Holmes shared his copy with his kid…

i put it on and it is playing when #2 daughter arrives – she who walketh in coolness – who immediately inquires how come i am playing such cool music and pleez can i burn it for her. i can indeed, i tell her – in fact, that is its main role, to be burned sans fee.

Square: The Unhip Parent’s Manifesto may be a bit over the top as a response to this piece but it’s a great read with plenty of classic lines to quote such as

Because parenting is not, and never has been, about being cool. Cool is quite simply not a legitimate child-rearing paradigm.

and

Parenting is the greatest of democracies; anyone can participate.
