What’s it like to be married to a geek?

January 15th, 2005 · 5 Comments

There are plenty of podcasts featuring Robert Scoble, but Robert and his wife Maryam Ghaemmaghami together?! I’m a fan of Maryam. So I knew I had to listen to Thursday night’s The Chris Pirillo Show and listen to this expose on what it’s like to be married to a geek [via Scobelizer] . Chris interviewed the husband and wife at his home; it was a fun show (I’d like to hear one with Ponzi included next time for even more fun!).

I agree that the single best segment in the show may be Maryam’s insights on life in Iran, what has happened there and why she came here. She praised the generosity and hospitality of the geek community. My favorite quotes from Maryam on what life is like being married to a geek included this observation:

They don’t have time to cheat on you…The thing you have to compete with is not another woman: it’s a toy….

I wasn’t looking to marry a geek or get a geek boyfriend or not get a geek – I was happy just to get a date! Maryam had some nice words to say about changing the bad rap geeks get in the singles scene (among women especially). Next week I will have lived thirteen years with one man and his harem of computers.

I even used to call one of them, the first one, Mistress Mac but now no more. Now there are too many to name! No, what’s different now is that I’ve seen the price Ted has had to pay for me in these years, and I know I have cost him more than any machine.

Listening to the show, I had to smile a few times. Just a few. 😉

Maryam and I read this together. That’s nice!

Glad you liked the show. It was a lot of fun. Thanks for listening to us and being a great part of our lives!

I really enjoyed listening to Maryam as well. Perhaps I should burn a copy of the show for my wife’s cd player.

Look forward to meeting you at Northern Voice, Julie!

My girlfriend Tamar says I have a second girlfriend, my computer. Mostly she says that with a smile, sometimes she’s mad 🙂

Jeffrey, you remind me that I used to tease my husband with, “So, am I your wife and physics is your mistress? Or am I your mistress and physics is your wife?”

Thanks everyone. This “married to a geek” topic brings up interesting aspects of relationships…and some funny questions…;-)
