Spring again

January 11th, 2004 · 1 Comment

The thermometer on the door says its close to 50 degrees. When the girls and I went outside for our morning adventure today, we played soccer on the lawn. It’s the first time in weeks that we’ve had the temperature and the turf to play. Most of the snow is melted, only a few spots here and there, the largest lump a remnant from the snowman we made on New Years Eve.

Abigail and Michaela requested that we play sharks and minnow. We three had a lot of fun running up and down the slope of our lawn chasing the ball and kicking it away from each other. Each of the girls fell onto the grass laughing, chests on the ground, damp knees in the air. Elisabeth watched from her stroller, comfortable outside at last, after weeks of crying in the cold.

What a comfortable day, the first one in a while, No more bundling and boots. Almost as if we got winter packed tight into two weeks. Or as if we’ve already overpaid into the cold weather account and getting some degrees back from the temperature bank in return.

In the yard I could see some plants that have browned and wilted, needing to be tended. Now that it’s warm enough, almost like spring again, I might be motivated enough to stop being a lazy gardener …..
