The return of the rain

August 9th, 2003 · No Comments

The rain returned today. After a long absence, the clouds came and poured with vengeance, as if to make up for all the summer rains missed. We woke to gutter percussion, the drumming of raindrops on the roof. Water running everywhere: the air warm like summer but the rain thick like winter. You could almost hear the dirt gulping it down with a satisfied sigh.

For the first day in weeks, the number of cars in the swimming pool parking lot could be counted on the fingers of one hand.

We realized the last time the girls wore pants. Digging through the drawers this morning, Abigail tried on a pair that left two inches of leg showing above her ankles! Michaela’s pants were tight too. During this dry spell the girls have been growing!

Our new van, White Elephant, which was due for a wash, turned a shade of gray.

In the garden, a bud opened and a golden star blossomed.
