A woman without a man is like

April 10th, 2004 · 1 Comment

A woman without a man is like a fish without a bicycle

I’m dating myself here: it’s been a while since I’ve seen any of these bumper stickers.

This site explains the history of the statement, derived by an Australian student , Irina Dunn, from her philosophy study (“A man needs God like a fish needs a bicycle”) in 1970 and soon became graffiti around the world…

Not long after the original graffito appeared it was joined by this sentiment, soon reproduced on feminist t-shirts and posters “Behind every great woman is a fish on a bicycle.”

I’m without a man this week. Ted’s in San Francisco. Without someone to watch the girls in the morning while I jog, I decided to be creative in my exercise and try to ride my bike in the driveway. I can’t remember the last time I rode it. It’s been that long.

On my bike I feel like a fish out of water. I feel like a fish on a bicycle.

I’m glad Ted’s coming home tomorrow. This woman without her man is tired.

note: at the time of this posting, Ted is home!

A friend of mine who’s grown to despise feminists has a counter-saying. She says, “a woman without a man is like a fish without water.”

    I always appreciated that. 🙂
